The Alexandria City Council is seeking applicants to fill the vacancies on City of Alexandria boards, commissions, and committees. Council will act on these vacancies at the June 11, 2024, City Council meeting. All applicants must complete a Personal Data Record form electronically via the City’s website at www.alexandriava.gov/Boards no later than 5:00 p.m. on May 31, 2024. Applications received after this deadline will not be forwarded to City Council. Applicants may only submit an application for one committee at a time.
MULTIPLE or DUPLICATE APPLICATIONS WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED.
Please note the meaning of the following terminology related to board vacancies:
Expiring Term – denotes a current member's term will be ending soon. There may or may not be an incumbent applying for the position.
Expired Term - denotes a term completed and no one is in the position.
Alexandria-Caen Sister City Committee – 2-year term
Meeting Schedule: second Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m.
One vacancy for consideration:
One citizen member, due to an expiring term.
Alexandria Housing Affordability Advisory Committee – 3-year term
Meeting Schedule: first Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m.
Two vacancies for consideration:
One Civic Association representative, due to an expiring term.
One representative of the Commission on Persons with Disabilities, due to a resignation.
Archaeological Commission – 4-year term
Meeting Schedule: meets at 7:00p.m. on the third Wednesday of each month.
One vacancy for consideration:
One Visit Alexandria representative, due to a resignation.
Beauregard Urban Design Advisory Committee – 2-year term
Meeting Schedule: at the call of the Chair - approximately four hours per month.
Two vacancies for consideration:
One member-at-large, due an expired term.
One citizen member, due to an expired term.
Beautification Commission – 2-year term
Meeting Schedule: second Thursday of each month at 7:30 p.m.
Two vacancies for consideration:
One citizen member, due to an expiring term.
One member with expertise in the field of landscape architecture or landscape design, due to a resignation.
Board of Architectural Review – 2-year term
Meeting Schedule: first and third Wednesday of each month at 7:00 pm except August.
One vacancy for consideration:
One citizen member, due to an expiring term.
Board of Zoning Appeals – 4-year term
Meeting Schedule: second Monday of the month at 7 pm.

Budget and Fiscal Affairs Advisory Committee – 2-year term
Meeting Schedule: third Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m.

One Chamber of Commerce representative, due to an expiring term.
Children, Youth and Families Collaborative Commission – 3-year term
Meeting Schedule: second Wednesday of each month from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m.
Five vacancies for consideration:
One high school student (one-year term), due to an expired term.
Two young adults, due to expired terms.
One community member with experience as a parent, guardian, teacher and/or expertise in early childhood, youth, or general education policy, due to a resignation.
One ACPS employee identified by the superintendent, due to an expired term
Citizen Corps Council – 3-year term
Meeting Schedule: fourth Monday of every other month.
Six vacancies for consideration:
One member in good standing of the CERT program, due to an expiring term.
One citizen member, due to an expired term.
One individual with law enforcement or crime prevention experience, due to an expired term.
One representative of the business community, due to an expired term.
One representative from the Commission on Persons with Disabilities, due to an expired term.
One member designated by an Alexandria School Board member, due to an expired term.
Commission for the Arts – 3-year term
Meeting Schedule: third Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m.
One vacancy for consideration:
One professional in the field related to the visual appearance of the city landscape, such as architecture, environmental design, landscape architecture or urban design, due to an expiring term.
Commission on Employment – 2-year term
Meeting Schedule: second Tuesday of each month at 8:00 a.m.
Four vacancies for consideration:
Three representatives from a recognized area business including minority-owned and small businesses, due to expired and expiring terms.
One representative from such organizations as educational agencies, organized labor, rehabilitation agencies community-based organizations, economic development agencies, and the area public employment service, due to an expired term.
Commission on HIV/AIDS – 3-year term
Meeting Schedule: third Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m.
Fifteen vacancies for consideration:
Seven citizen members, due to expired terms and resignations.
One Sheriff’s Designee, due to an expired term.
One HIV/AIDS service organization which provided services in the City to the minority community, due to an expired term.
One local Gay and Lesbian Community Association (AGLCA) representative, due to an expired term.
One representative from Hospice of Northern Virginia, due to an expired term.
One Alexandria Community Services Board representative, due to an expired term.
One member who is a practicing physician, due to a resignation.
One member for and representing Inova Juniper, due to a resignation.
One Commission for Women representative, due to an expiring term.
Commission on Information Technology – 3-year term
Meeting Schedule: meets on the second or third Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m.
Two vacancies for consideration:
One Alexandria City High School representative, due to a resignation.
One Budget and Fiscal Affairs Advisory Committee representative, due to an expired term.
Commission on Persons with Disabilities – 2-year term
Meeting Schedule: meets at 7:00 p.m. on the second Wednesday of every month.
Three vacancies for consideration:
Two citizen members, due to expired terms.
One Chamber of Commerce business representative, due to an expired term.
Community Criminal Justice Board – 2-year term
Meeting Schedule: first Thursday of each month at 4:00 p.m.

One representative of local education to be nominated by the Superintendent of Schools, due to an expired term.
One representative of non-profit organizations recommended by the Alexandria United Way, due to an expired term.
Community Services Board – 3-year term

One consumer member currently receiving service, due to an expired term.
Economic Opportunities Commission – 2-year term
Meeting Schedule: third Wednesday of each month at 7:00 p.m.

One Category I - Elected public official (State representative) currently holding office, due to an expired term.
Emergency Medical Services Council – 2-year term
Meeting Schedule: meets quarterly at the call of the Chair.

Environmental Policy Commission – 2-year term
Meeting Schedule: third Monday of each month at 7:30 p.m.

One member with experience in federal or state environmental statutes, regulations, and procedures (preferably an attorney), due to an expired term.
George Washington Birthday Celebration Committee – 2-year term

One member who attends high school in the City of Alexandria, due to an expired term.

One member from historically, racially, or socially marginalized communities that have commonly experienced disparate policing in Alexandria or the Commonwealth of Virginia members, due to a resignation.
Landlord-Tenant Relations Board – 2-years
Meeting Schedule: meets on the first Wednesday of each month at 7:00 p.m.

Local Emergency Planning Committee – 2-year term
Meeting Schedule: at the call of the Chair quarterly.

One owner and operator of facilities subject to the federal emergency planning requirements of the Super Fund Amendments and Reauthorization Act of 1986 (SARA), due to an expired term.
One representative of a community group, due to an expiring term.
One representative of broadcast and print media, due to an expiring term.
Park and Recreation Commission – 3-year term
Meeting Schedule: meets on the third Thursday of the month at 7:00 p.m.

Real Estate Assessment Review Board – 3-year term
Meeting Schedule: at the call of the Chair (between June and December – up to three meetings per week)

Waterfront Commission – 2-year term
Meeting Schedule: third Tuesday of each month at 7:30 a.m.
Four vacancies for consideration:
One Planning Commission representative, due to an expiring term.
One Planning District III representative, due to an expired term.
One Old Town Civic Association representative, due to an expired term.
Applicants may only submit an application to one committee at a time.
Applicants must comply with City Ordinance No. 2452, which states that no appointee shall reside outside of the City of Alexandria unless a residency waiver is granted by Council.
